![]() ![]() Today was the fourth time in six years that the office has held an impromptu golf outing at the Pub Course (once a single course, now a pair: a 12-hole version and a (considerably tougher) 20-hole commitment). ![]() We've returned in the 10+ years so many times I've lost count. On our first visit in May '99, prior to our move later that same year, my wife and I drank pints of Hammerhead and Ruby on a cool, rainy afternoon in the Power Station Restaurant. Next time I would try and sample some wine and spirits and save the beer for when I returned to Portland. While I won't vouch for the Power Station food, the atmosphere of the property makes up for the food quality. This is worth a stop if you are visiting the Columbia Gorge area. The prices were not bad, with burgers running around $8 and pints around $4. Our server was a little aloof, but our food did come as ordered. ![]() The IPA was a little too heavy for me, but was not terrible. ![]() They have Ruby, Hammerhead, IPA, Terminator Stout, Bagdad Ale, Black Rabbit Porter, and an ESB. The beer is composed of the usual McMenamain's suspects. My wife's fries were not crisp and were oily the tater tots I had were tasty and were Ore'ida-riffic. They reminded me of Sysco frozen hockey puck burgers. All 3 of us ordered burgers, which we felt were not very good. The Power Station Pub is the less expensive option and this is where we ate lunch. They have two restaurants, the Black Rabbit and the Power Station Pub. They make their own beer, spirits, and wine here. There are various bars scattered throughout (one is a wine bar and one is dedicated to Jerry Garcia). The property has lots of buildings and houses a hotel, golf course, and spa. Edgefield is located in the tiny town of Troutdale and is one of the most interesting places I have ever visited. We stopped in here after hanging out at Multnomah Falls and the Columbia Gorge. The Edgefield property is about 20 mminutes outside Portland. I have tried many of McMenamins beers over the years, but had never visited one of their properties. I could be a regular if I lived near one of these places. I think the quality ois good and prices are reasonable. They are interesting and located all over Oregon and southeast Washington. Pub fare for the most part, with a Irish special for the weekend. The place was busy with the St Paddy's day weekend festivities. We went to a pub located in the old power plant building. I could spend a lot of time at this place. Multiple venues on the grounds including cozy little pubs, and huge tents for concerts and such. The place is a historic site, used to be a country poor farm (pre-welfare), now a hotel and a collection of pubs and other hospitality facilities. And this is just a few of the places to grab a drink and they allow you to walk around the resort with your drinks, so no need to finish it before heading to hang out on the deck or at the gardens! Our personal favorite drinking spot was Jerry's Ice House, which was the cold storage of the farm (before refrigeration) that is now filled with posters and memorabilia dedicated to Jerry Garcia of the Grateful Dead.I stopped for a beer and a bite to eat at the Edgefield Brewery while traveling to Portland. You can grab a glass of wine at the winery, head to the Little Red Shed for spirits and cigars, or play some pool and darts with a beer at the Lucky Staehly's Pool Hall. Since McMenamins makes their own beer, spirits, and wine on site, they really encourage drinking of all kinds (and now you know why we love these places so much). The property has multiple restaurants including the delicious Black Rabbit restaurant (we got the ribeye and the bolognese and both were incredible) as well as a more casual Power Station Pub (pizza, burgers) and the seasonal Loading Dock Grill. Located just 20 minutes from downtown Portland, it makes a great weekend getaway! It was the first hotel that the McMenamins family opened, and it's by far our favorite. Today we are going to focus on McMenamins Edgefield, which we like to consider the motherload. Each location has it's own unique attributes and personality which make them wonderful. McMenamins has been transforming historic buildings into hotel resorts since the early 90s and now have 12 lodging locations throughout Oregon and Washington and more pubs and eateries than we care to count. It's like your favorite resort only with edge! Let us explain. It's not very often that, in addition to your room for the night, you also get a brewery, distillery, winery, coffee roastery, spa, music venue, movie theater, golf course, and history lesson all in one. Maybe that's because they are so much more than just a place to stay. There are plenty of amazing hotels to stay at throughout Washington and Oregon, but you will never find a hotel group quite like McMenamins. ![]()
